An L-Bracket

L-Bracket

This is a short one: L-brackets (L-plates) are convenient to quickly change between vertical and horizontal orientation of the camera on the tripod. Ballheads are very inconvenient to change between vertical and horizontal orientation of the camera on the tripod - also, the camera is off-center in vertical orientation. There are custom-made brackets tailored to specific camera bodies such as the ones by KIRK enterprises or Really Right Stuff. These are really nice but they are only L-brackets. The one shown on the left also forms part of a panorama head and thus has dual use... It's also possible to simply use a bracket from the hardware store.

It seems like an exotic accessory but realise that you take much too few vertical shots because of the hassle with the ballhead! Btw., these brackets also add extra protection to the camera (and weight). Get one.
